Gondor could preserve a tower, a tomb, or a royal tradition for thousands of years. Its calendar was treated with much the same conservatism.
That makes one detail in the history of the Dúnedain surprisingly revealing: their calendar occasionally needed extraordinary corrections. Not because Gondor casually redesigned the year, but because a tiny astronomical error could survive for centuries before becoming large enough to demand attention.
Appendix D of The Lord of the Rings describes a system inherited from Númenor, carried through the Downfall, preserved by the Exiles, and eventually revised by the Stewards. At the heart of that history lies what might be called the millennial deficit: the slow mismatch between the Númenórean calendar and the actual solar year.
The corrections were tiny. The timescales were enormous.
And that is exactly why Gondor revised its calendar so rarely.

The Númenóreans Had Already Solved the Ordinary Leap-Year Problem
The calendar later inherited by Gondor began in Númenor.
The King’s Reckoning divided an ordinary year into 365 days. Twelve months accounted for most of them, while additional days stood outside the months. As with any calendar attempting to follow the Sun, however, 365 days was not quite enough.
The Númenóreans therefore had a leap-year rule.
Normally, an extra day was introduced every fourth year. This brought the average calendar year much closer to the true solar year, but it did not make it exact.
That difference is crucial.
A simple four-year leap cycle averages 365.25 days per year. The actual seasonal year is slightly shorter. The resulting discrepancy is tiny in a human lifetime, but Númenórean civilization was unusually well placed to notice problems that emerge only across centuries.
Their answer was a second level of correction.
At the end of a century, the usual extra day was omitted. This compensated for the gradual overcorrection produced by the four-year cycle.
But even that was not the end of the system.
Why Gondor Needed a Rule for Thousands of Years
Appendix D gives the remarkable additional provision: after a thousand years, the accumulated adjustment itself required correction.
In the Númenórean system, a millennial addition was made to compensate for the remaining deficit. This involved adding extra time at extraordinarily long intervals.
That tells us something important about the calendar.
It was not merely a practical arrangement for farmers deciding when spring had arrived. It was constructed to remain aligned over spans longer than entire historical civilizations.
The King’s Reckoning passed from Númenor to the surviving Dúnedain realms after the Downfall. Gondor and Arnor did not simply invent new calendars when they founded their kingdoms in Middle-earth. They preserved the old reckoning.
That continuity was impressive, but it created a complication.
The calendar’s correction rules depended upon long sequences of counted years. History, unfortunately, did not divide itself into neat astronomical intervals.
The Second Age ended.
The Third Age began.
The Sun did not care.
The Change of Age Created a Hidden Problem
The Númenórean system had been designed around long-term corrections. But the official numbering of years restarted when the Second Age ended.
That distinction mattered.
A calendar can call a year “1” without the heavens beginning again. The Earth’s seasons do not reset because historians declare the beginning of a new Age.
The King’s Reckoning continued in the realms of the Exiles, but the millennial corrections were now associated with the new Third Age count. In effect, the calendar’s bookkeeping and the uninterrupted astronomical passage of time no longer fitted together as cleanly as the original scheme intended.
Nothing catastrophic happened.
Winter did not suddenly arrive in summer. Harvests did not shift by months.
The error accumulated quietly.
That is the key to understanding Gondor’s calendar history. Its great revisions were responses to extremely slow drift, not evidence that its calendar was constantly failing.
For generations, there would have been almost nothing to notice.
Then generations became centuries.

Mardil Inherited Thousands of Years of Calendar History
The decisive reform came under Mardil Voronwë, the first Ruling Steward.
By his time Gondor had changed profoundly. The royal line had failed after King Eärnur disappeared, and the Stewards governed in the King’s absence. Yet even amid that political rupture, the old calendar remained.
Mardil did not discard it.
He corrected it.
Appendix D places his revision around the 5,500th year from the beginning of the Númenórean reckoning. By then the accumulated deficit had approached two days.
Two days may sound trivial after five and a half millennia.
In fact, that is evidence of how effective the original calendar had been.
A badly constructed calendar would wander dramatically against the seasons over such a span. The King’s Reckoning had remained close enough that its inherited error could still be repaired by a correction measured in days.
At the end of Third Age 2059, Mardil added two days.
Then, beginning in 2060, Gondor used the revised system generally called the Stewards’ Reckoning.
The Stewards Changed the Shape of the Year Too
Mardil’s reform was more than an emergency insertion of missing days.
The Stewards’ Reckoning regularized the months into twelve periods of thirty days. Additional days outside the months completed the year, including the days around midsummer and other intercalary observances.
This made the calendar structurally different from the older King’s Reckoning while retaining its Númenórean ancestry.
What matters for the millennial deficit is that Mardil’s correction did not pretend the underlying problem had never existed. The revised reckoning continued to acknowledge the need for occasional long-term adjustment.
And even Mardil’s correction was not the last.
Three centuries later, another Steward had to intervene.
Hador Added One Day in 2360
In Third Age 2360, Steward Hador added another day to the calendar.
Again, the scale is striking.
Three hundred years had passed since the introduction of Mardil’s revised reckoning.
The correction was one day.
For an individual Gondorian, this would barely qualify as a problem. For an institution concerned with preserving the proper relationship between named dates and the seasons across centuries, it mattered.
This is why describing Gondor’s calendar as frequently “reformed” can give the wrong impression.
Its history is almost the opposite.
The system was stable enough that exceptional corrections could be separated by centuries. The civilization maintaining it simply possessed a historical horizon long enough to care when a fraction of a day per century eventually became a whole day.
The calendar reveals a society thinking on Númenórean timescales even after Númenor itself had vanished beneath the sea.

Why There Was No Millennial Addition in Third Age 3000
One of Appendix D’s most intriguing details comes near the end of the Third Age.
The expected millennial additions were not made in the year 3000.
The text records the omission and notes that by the end of Third Age 3019 the resulting deficit had still not reached a full day.
That year, of course, Gondor had considerably more urgent concerns.
Sauron’s power was rising toward its final war. Minas Tirith would soon be besieged. Denethor II was the last Ruling Steward, and the political order established after Eärnur’s disappearance was nearing its end.
It would be tempting to invent a dramatic reason for the omission, but the texts do not require one. The safe conclusion is simply that the prescribed millennial correction was not made, and the remaining discrepancy was still comparatively small when the Third Age ended.
Then the King returned.
And the calendar changed for a very different reason.
Elessar’s New Reckoning Was More Than an Astronomical Repair
After Sauron’s fall, King Elessar established the New Reckoning.
This revision should not be treated merely as another response to accumulated astronomical drift. Its most conspicuous change was historical and symbolic.
The new year began with the date corresponding to 25 March in the Shire Reckoning: the day on which the One Ring was destroyed and Sauron’s power collapsed.
Gondor’s calendar was therefore reorganized around the defining event of the new age.
The older calendars had expressed continuity with Númenor. Mardil’s revision had preserved that inheritance while repairing its accumulated inaccuracies. Elessar’s calendar could preserve the past while marking an unmistakable beginning.
The distinction matters.
Mardil’s correction tells us how seriously Gondor took astronomical continuity.
Elessar’s tells us how calendars can also express historical memory.
A date is never only a number when a kingdom decides what event should define the beginning of its year.
The Tiny Error Reveals Something Larger About Gondor
The millennial deficit seems like one of the driest subjects in Middle-earth: leap days, century rules, and fractions of solar years.
Yet it exposes something unusually intimate about the Dúnedain.
Their civilization lived among the remains of its own enormous past.
Gondor inherited language from Númenor. It inherited titles, names, lore, political traditions, and memories of a kingdom that no longer physically existed.
It inherited its calendar too.
That meant a mathematical decision made by ancient Númenórean scholars could still matter to a Steward thousands of years later.
Mardil’s two added days were therefore more than an administrative convenience. They were the consequence of maintaining a system across the Downfall of Númenor, the Last Alliance, the loss of Arnor, the decline of Gondor’s kings, and the beginning of the rule of the Stewards.
The calendar had survived all of it.
Its tiny accumulated error was almost a measurement of that survival.

Gondor Revised the Calendar Rarely Because It Was Built to Last
The strange lesson of Gondor’s calendar is that its revisions demonstrate stability rather than instability.
Ordinary leap years handled the obvious discrepancy between a 365-day calendar and the solar year. Century rules corrected the smaller error created by that system. Millennial additions addressed what remained over still longer spans.
Only when history interfered with that carefully constructed sequence did a noticeable deficit slowly emerge.
Mardil corrected nearly two days after millennia of accumulated reckoning. Hador later added another day. The planned correction around Third Age 3000 was omitted, yet the calendar was still less than a day adrift when the Age ended.
That is extraordinary precision for a system carried through the destruction of the civilization that created it.
Gondor’s rare calendar revisions therefore belong to one of the broader patterns of its history.
The Dúnedain were always trying to preserve something while time worked against them.
Sometimes it was a bloodline.
Sometimes a city.
Sometimes a memory of Númenor.
And sometimes the evidence of passing time was almost invisible: not a ruined tower or an empty throne, but a fraction of a day accumulating silently across a thousand years.
