The Council of Elrond gathered in Rivendell around a small golden Ring, but the strangest thing about that meeting was not the Ring itself. By then, the Wise knew enough to fear it. Elrond remembered the Last Alliance. Gandalf had traced the Ring’s history through Gollum, Bilbo, and Frodo. Aragorn had hunted for Gollum. Boromir … Read more
Galadriel’s Mirror looks, at first, like one of the most useful objects in Middle-earth. A silver basin, water drawn from a stream, starlight above Lothlórien, and suddenly the hidden paths of the world begin to appear. For a reader who wants answers, it seems almost unfair. Why not ask the Mirror where the Ring must … Read more
The white gem Arwen placed around Frodo’s neck is easy to miss beside greater things: the One Ring, the shards of Narsil reforged, the Palantíri, the Silmarils remembered only in song. It is a small object, given quietly after the victory is won, when kings are crowned and farewells begin. Yet its meaning is far … Read more
The One Ring does not always begin its work by whispering cruelty. Sometimes it begins with a beloved city under siege. That is what makes Boromir’s fall at Amon Hen so painful. He is not a servant of Sauron. He is not a traitor who secretly longs for Mordor. He is a captain of Gondor, … Read more
Gandalf could face a Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, stand against the Nazgûl, and speak with a fire that seemed older than mortal courage. Yet he was not sent to Middle-earth as a conquering angel. He came as an old man in grey, weary, hungry, cold, and often dependent on doors being opened to … Read more
Rivendell feels, at first glance, like the answer to Middle-earth’s problems. Hidden in a deep valley, guarded by secrecy, preserved by Elven wisdom, it appears untouched by the spreading Shadow. Heroes heal there. Songs remember forgotten ages. The Ring-bearer finds rest there. Even the fate of the world is debated beneath its roofs. Yet Tolkien’s … Read more
Radagast the Brown is easy to dismiss because the story gives us so little of him. He is not present at the Council of Elrond. He does not ride to Minas Tirith. He does not challenge Saruman. He does not stand before the Balrog. By the time the War of the Ring reaches its full … Read more
Frodo Baggins does not carry a sword strong enough to defeat Sauron. He does not command armies, wield great magic, or possess ancient wisdom. Yet in the deepest darkness of Mordor, when hope has almost failed, he reaches for a small crystal phial that contains the light of a star. That light is not symbolic … Read more
The name itself is almost misleading. The Undying Lands sound like a place where death has been defeated. They lie beyond the bent seas, west of Middle-earth, where the Valar dwell, where the Eldar may return, and where Frodo, Bilbo, and later Sam are permitted to sail after the War of the Ring. To a … Read more
Shelob is easy to mistake for a monster placed in the story simply to frighten Frodo and Sam before Mordor. She waits in the dark. She poisons. She devours. She turns a secret pass into a place of web, stench, and dread. On the surface, she looks like one more horror in Sauron’s land, another … Read more
